There is a big difference between marketing and advertising, which is often misunderstood. Advertising is actually a critical component of marketing.  Marketing is the whole shebang.

It might be easier to understand if you view the actual definitions of each, then we'll dive in a little deeper.

Marketing Definition: All business activity involved in the moving of goods from the producer to the consumer, including selling, advertising, packaging, etc..

Advertising Definition: The paid non-personal presentation or promotion to a company's existing and potential customers.

Advertising is just a section of the grand Marketing agenda.  It can be as simple as placing a simple text ad, or it may involve a complicated process of developing several ads, via different media types.  Possible print ads, website advertising, billboard, direct mail, radio and television advertising are different mediums for delivery and the list goes on.  It is not simply the placement of the advertisements, but the action of designing and initializing a campaign to deliver the intended message, no matter what type of media is involved.  Whether it be a simple or complicated a process, it is important to remember advertising is only a piece of the marketing puzzle, yet advertising is the largest expense of most marketing plans.

Marketing consists of everything a company does before, during and after a monetary exchange for goods sold to that customer.  All aspects of Marketing are necessary for the life of most companies without exception.  To survive and continue to grow a solid marketing plan needs to be executed with precision, revisited, tweaked and executed again and again..  Market research is the start then testing the waters with a little media planning, PR(public relations) campaigning, product pricing, distribution, CRM, customer support, sales strategy, drip campaign dev, the list goes on. Advertising only equals one piece of the puzzle. All other pieces of the puzzle must not only be developed individually to work independently, they must also fit perfectly with the rest of the pieces of the puzzle for the whole marketing process to come to fruition.

Marketing takes time, and lots of it.  A good Marketing Plan is merely the beginning.  The application of that plan and the ability to revisit, test and tweak the campaign and its parts such as advertising for maximum return, can make all the difference in the world.
